Medina Community Band will present the second concert of the 2018 summer season, a celebration of 159 years (since 1859) of presenting community concerts in Medina, on Friday, June 8th, 2018, at 8:30p, in Medina’s Uptown Park Square Gazebo. Concerts will continue every Friday through Friday, July 27th. A special July 4th concert is planned as well. All concerts will begin at 8:30p.
Featured soloists for the concert will be Denise Milner-Howell, mezzo-soprano, who will sing Rossini’s “Una Voca Poco Fa” from his opera “The Barber of Seville” and Gershwin’s “S' Wonderful” from his operetta “Funny Face,” and Thomas Lempner, alto saxophone, who will perform Hagen’s “Harlem Nocturne” and Binge’s “Romance.”
In conjunction with the Bicentennial of the City of Medina, Medina Community Band will feature selections written and/or performed during various time periods: June 8th (1838-1858); June 15th (1858-1878); June 22nd (1878-1898); June 29th (1898-1918); July 4th (1918-1938); July 6th (1938-1958); July 13th (1958-1978); July 20th (1978-1998); and, July 27th (1998-2018).
Neiman will conduct the community band in Offenbach’s overture to the opera “La Belle Hélène;” Schmidt’s quickstep “Tippecanoe;” Johnson’s quickstep “Fireman’s Quickstep;” Stephen Foster’s march “Santa Anna’s Retreat from Buena Vista;” and, John Philip Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”
Concerts by the Medina Community Band traditionally last approximately one hour and are patterned after outdoor band concerts in the 1880s through 1930s and feature concert overtures, solos by instrumentalists and vocalists, as well as popular selections, and lots and lots of marches. Area social and civic groups will be featured as summer social hosts providing light refreshments at a reasonable donation during each concert: June 8th – United Church of Christ, Congregational; June 15th – Medina County Historical Society; June 22nd – Boy Scouts of America Troop 514; June 29 – TBA; July 4th & 6th – Medina Breakfast Kiwanis Club; July 13th – Medina Lions Club; July 20th, Medina Creative Housing; and, July 27th – M.C. Real Estate.
Marcus Neiman conducts Medina Community Band and will be joined in the conducting duties by David Roth (associate conductor), John Connors (assistant conductor), and Vicki Smith, guest conductor.
Medina Community Band is proudly sponsored and supported by the Medina Community Band Association, composed of members of Medina Community Band. The board of directors consists of Lu Ann Gresh, president; Vicki Smith, vice president; Gail Sigmund, financial secretary; Amy Muhl, treasurer; Sue McLaughlin, secretary; with directors Margaret Blasko, John Connors, and, Robert Moore.
Membership in MCB is open and there are no dues or auditions; however, members are expected to maintain a regular attendance. The band rehearses on Wednesday evening from 7p - 9p in the band room of Highland High School (4150 Ridge Road, Medina) September through the end of July; providing three to four concerts during the fall, winter, and spring months both at home and on the road. The band also presents their popular summer series every Friday, June through July, in Medina's Uptown Park Gazebo. Each year the band presents at a winter concert, spring concert, and the popular "Sousa Concert" at EHOVE Career Center (Milan, OH).
