Medina Community Band will present the seventh concert of the 2018 summer season, a celebration of 159 years (since 1859) of presenting community concerts in Medina, on Friday, July 6th, 2018, at 8:30p, in Medina’s Uptown Park Square Gazebo. Concerts will continue every Friday through Friday, July 27th. All concerts will begin at 8:30p.
Featured soloist for the concert will be: James Fry, cornet, who will perform Leroy Anderson’s “Trumpeter’s Lullaby” and Sadie Nayman, flute, who will perform Gabriel Fauré’s “Fantasie, Op 79.”
Featured ensembles will be a cornet trio with Lu Ann Gresh, Marcia Nelson-Kline, and, Paul Rocco performing Don Jacoby’s “Carnival Variations.”
Maestro Neiman will conduct the band in Henry Clay Work’s “Marching Through Georgia,” Leonard Bernstein’s “Make Our Garden Grow” from “Candide,” and “Danzon” from “Fancy Free,” and, Luigi Denza’s “Funiculì, Funiculà,” as well as Julius Fucík’s march “Enter the Gladiators – Thunder and Blazes,” and Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”
In conjunction with the Bicentennial of the City of Medina, Medina Community Band will feature selections written and/or performed during the period of 1938 through 1958. Associate conductor David Roth will conduct J.J. Richards’s “Emblem of Unity” and Karl L. King’s “Call to Victory.” Vicki Smith will conduct Leonard Bernstein’s “Gee, Officer Krupke” from “West Side Story,” and, King’s march “Algeria.”
Concerts by the Medina Community Band traditionally last approximately one hour and are patterned after outdoor band concerts in the 1880s through 1930s and feature concert overtures, solos by instrumentalists and vocalists, as well as popular selections, and lots and lots of marches. Area social and civic groups will be featured as summer social hosts providing light refreshments at a reasonable donation during each concert. The July 6th concert will feature Medina Breakfast Kiwanis Club as social host.
Marcus Neiman conducts Medina Community Band and will be joined in the conducting duties by David Roth (associate conductor) and John Connors (assistant conductor). Medina Community Band is proudly sponsored and supported by the Medina Community Band Association, composed of members of Medina Community Band. The board of directors consists of Lu Ann Gresh, president; Vicki Smith, vice president; Gail Sigmund, financial secretary; Amy Muhl, treasurer; Sue McLaughlin, secretary; with directors Margaret Blasko, John Connors, and, Robert Moore.
Membership in MCB is open and there are no dues or auditions; however, members are expected to maintain a regular attendance. The band rehearses on Wednesday evening from 7p - 9p in the orchestra room of Medina High School (777 East Union Street, Medina) September through the end of July.
