Ohio Regional Music Arts and Cultural Outreach (ORMACO) presents Akron-based musician Samuel Salsbury in a special Indian classical music concert and talk. Samuel will play the sarangi, a rarely heard bowed string instrument of North India.
The program will include music selections from North India, to which Samuel has devoted intensive study since 2014. Using an instrument that is 125 years old, he will present a portion of a classical raga, an original song he wrote for a friend, and a bhajan (devotional songs). Samuel will also speak about the instrument, Hindustani music and a few of his experiences as he immersed himself in this rich and deeply spiritual culture.
The concert is free, but reservations are recommended by calling 330-722-2541.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Samuel Salsbury, who resides in Akron, is a fine and versatile violinist, improviser, and recording artist. He is also one of the few non-Indians to play the sarangi, a bowed instrument with 39 strings, whose rich and resonant tone is known for penetrating deep into the hearts of listeners. For the past five years, he has spent between three to four months of each year in the holy city of Varanasi, taking daily lessons with his guru, Pt. Santosh Mishra, an 8th-generation sarangi master. While there earlier this year, he presented three solo concerts.
As a violinist, Salsbury brings soulful depth to a wide assortment of musical styles and situations. Probably best known for his kirtan performances, he has played with many of the world’s leading kirtan artists in the creation of sacred chants rooted in Hinduism and yoga practice. Although he received classical training at the Cleveland Institute of Music, his eclectic musical background has also included performances in rock, blues, jazz, avant-garde, tribal and Cajun/zydeco. His spiritual journey dates back to early childhood and has taken him to such countries as Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Japan and, most recently, India.
Samuel has several solo projects in the works, but his recording history includes primarily collaborations, albums by his bands and recording projects for other artists. His two most recent recordings are available for purchase:
• The Market of Kashi - This instrumental journey is a collaboration between Samuel Salsbury and world-musician, Mike Hovancsek (2017)
• Ignite the Soul - this double CD captures a live collaborative performance of singer-songwriter Zach (Friedhof) and Samuel Salsbury (2014)
Some of his groups with out-of-print recordings include:
• The Hazards – Hey Joe single (1966) on YouTube
• Delicate Balance – Driftwood Album
• Fable—Storybook Album
• Mystic Forest
Samuel is prominently featured on CDs of other artists, including recent releases by:
