March Program: The Edmund Fitzgerald

Saturday, March 9 - 1:00 PM

Presentation of the The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by local historian Mike Zronek

The Medina County Historical Society will offer a special presentation by Historian Mike Zronek on the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald at 1:00pm on Saturday March 9th, at the Medina County District Library, 210 S. Broadway St., Medina, Community Room A & B.

The shipwreck immortalized by Gordon Lightfoot’s 1976 hit song lives on in Zronek’s presentation.  Zronek, a 1972 Solon High School graduate, joined the Coast Guard at the age of 17 and was later stationed on 180’ Buoy tender/icebreaker that was called into action to search for and possibly rescue the crew of the ill-fated ship during one of the worst storms ever seen on Lake Superior. The Edmund Fitzgerald sank during that storm resulting in the loss of the entire crew of 29 men.

Zronek, who retired in 2002 from the U.S. Coast Guard as a first-class petty officer after a 29-year career will share slides regarding the mystery that remains about how this ship sank only 17 miles from Whitefish Bay in northern Michigan.

The program will conclude with a Q&A and the ringing of a ship bell 30 times -- 29 for each of the crewmen who died on the Edmund Fitzgerald and once for all of the others whose lives have been lost on the Great Lakes.
