Ohio Regional Music Arts and Cultural Outreach opens its 2019 free Sunday afternoon concerts with the area percussionist Mell Csicsila in a program entitled Striking Things. Mell will present a program of percussion music from across the globe incorporating traditional and modern takes on dance music, jazz, poetry, and western art music. The concert will feature tuned percussion including the vibraphone and marimba with a side trip to the garden department of your local home improvement store.
Mell Csicsila has been a dynamic presence on the Cleveland musical scene for over 20 years. A Cleveland native, he can be heard frequently performing as as a first-call percussionist for Cleveland's Playhouse Square Theatre Foundation and with professional ensembles including the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, The Cleveland Pops Orchestra, CityMusic Cleveland, Lyric Opera Cleveland, and the Erie, West Virginia and Wheeling Symphonies. Mell has backed a number of artists including Johnny Mathis, Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Jr., the Moody Blues and Yes, and supported the national tours of over twenty Broadway musicals including Wicked, The Producers, Hairspray, and Mary Poppins, and has performed with them in theatres across the United States. An active educator, Mell is a teaching artist for the Cleveland Orchestra's Learning Through Music program and has been on the faculties of Cuyahoga Community College, Kent State Regional Campuses, and Lorain County Community College.
